Hazelton's Two Home Runs Highlight Split With Marymount

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College softball junior Paytyn Hazelton hit her first two home runs of the season as the Green Terror split a doubleheader with Marymount (Va.) Thursday in their home opener at the Softball Park.

McDaniel (6-10) posted its third shutout of the season and second in the last three games with an 8-0 win in game one before the Saints scored seven runs in the top of the fifth of game two en route to a 10-4 victory.

Senior Evie Craig led the Green Terror with four hits on the day, going 4-for-6 with four RBIs while graduate student Katy Newton had three hits, including one in each game to extend her hitting streak to 12 games.

Hazelton provided what proved to be all the offense the Green Terror would need in the bottom of the second, breaking a scoreless tie with a lead-off home run to right field on a 3-2 count. It was her first home run this season and the fifth of her career.

Leading 1-0, McDaniel increased its lead with three runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run double down the left field line by Craig that scored Newton and sophomore Bella Sylvester. After a walk by Hazelton, Craig would score on a single through the right side by senior Kylie Sears.

The Green Terror would invoke the run rule with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, keyed by a three-run homer by Hazelton. Junior Mandy Butz provided the eighth and final run after she walked, stole second, advanced to third on a throwing error and scored on a wild pitch.

Hazelton finished 2-for-2 with a walk, four RBIs and two runs while Craig was 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs. Newton went 2-for-3.

In the circle, senior Parker Murphy needed just 59 pitches to pick up her fourth win in six starts this season, totaling her second shutout and fifth complete game. She allowed just four hits and one walk over 5.0 innings while striking out two.

The Saints (10-12) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third, scoring on an RBI-single in the second and a throwing error in the third.

Amazingly, just like game one, McDaniel would score three runs in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Craig and an RBI-single from Sears.

However, the lead would be short-lived as Marymount would tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth on an RBI-double by Kaylynn Johnson.

The Saints would break the game open in the fifth, scoring seven runs, six of which came on two home runs, including a grand slam by Leila Hernandez, her first career home run. Johnson would add her team-leading seventh home run of the season, a two-run shot to left to cap the scoring for the visitors and giving them a 10-3 lead.

Newton picked up her lone hit with a single to left in the sixth to extend her hit streak before senior Colleen Camburn scored following a Marymount throwing error to provide the final margin.

Craig totaled three of the eight hits for the Green Terror, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Camburn scored two of the team's four runs. Sylvester went 2-for-4 as the McDaniel's first four hitters combined to go 7-for-14.

Despite allowing just seven hits and four earned runs over 7.0 innings, sophomore Kattie Hutchison suffered her first loss in two starts this season after surrendering eight walks.

McDaniel opens Centennial Conference play at home on Saturday when it hosts Haverford for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The Green Terror were picked to finish fourth in the Centennial Conference Preseason Coaches Poll while receiving one first-place vote.
