WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College women's lacrosse junior
Emma Legacy had a hand in two of the team's final three goals, but the comeback came up just short as undefeated Juniata held on for a 12-10 victory Wednesday at Gill Stadium.
McDaniel (3-4) suffered its first loss at home in exactly one month since a 17-7 loss to Shenandoah back on Feb. 22.
Legacy and senior
Acadia Noll led the Green Terror with three points each. Legacy had two goals and one assist while Noll scored three goals, all on consecutive free-position attempts, marking her first hat-trick this season and sixth of her career.
After the Eagles (9-0) jumped out to a 5-1 lead midway through the second quarter, McDaniel rallied with five consecutive goals, taking its first lead, 6-5, following Legacy's first goal of the game with 6:35 remaining in the third quarter.
Legacy tied the game for the fifth time with her second goal with only 37 seconds remaining in the quarter as the two teams headed to the fourth tied at 8-8.
The game featured five ties and three lead changes, but Juniata scored the first three goals of the final quarter, including one each from Peyton Goodrich and Grace Gibbs who have combined for 87 goals in just nine games this season.
Trailing 11-8 with under six minutes to play, the Green Terror got back-to-back goals from sophomore
Paris Conord and
Charlotte Alexander to pull within one with 3:42 left in regulation.
However, that would be as close as McDaniel would get as the Eagles won the ensuing draw control before Goodrich netted her fourth goal of the game and team-leading 45th of the season with 2:36 remaining to seal Juniata's sixth-straight road win.
The Green Terror out-shot the Eagles, 30-23, including 8-4 in the final quarter, and won 18 out of 26 draw controls. Junior
Emma Miller won eight draw controls, including the 200th of her career on her first of the game with under a minute to play in the second quarter to become only the fifth player in team history to reach 200.
Miller ranks fifth with 207 for her career, just 12 behind Olivia Geiger who ranks fourth after totaling 219 from 2015-18.
In addition to going 3-for-3 on free-position attempts, Noll also totaled two draw controls, three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Legacy added six draw controls.
Freshman
Caleigh Kohr made her fifth-straight start in goal, finishing with five first-half saves before she was relieved by senior
Astrid Jensen who finished with four in the second half.
McDaniel returns to action on Saturday when it opens Centennial Conference play at home against Bryn Mawr. Opening draw is set for 1 p.m.
