Murphy Shuts Out Royals in Split at Eastern Mennonite

HARRISONBURG, Va. - McDaniel College softball senior Parker Murphy posted her first shutout of the season in game one as the Green Terror split a non-conference doubleheader at Eastern Mennonite Wednesday.

McDaniel (2-4) picked up its second shutout victory of the season and posted its first win in two one-run games this season.

Graduate student Katy Newton had a hit in both contests to extend her hitting streak to 10 games as she was 3-for-7 with three runs scored. Junior Taylor Routzahn also hit in each, going 2-for-5 with a double, walk and three RBIs.

Murphy stifled Royal hitters in the opener, limiting them to just four hits and one walk.

The game was scoreless through four innings until freshman Ryan Smith hit a two-out double to right center in the top of the fifth before coming around to score on an RBI-single by Routzahn.

Eastern Mennonite threatened in the bottom of the inning when Reese Rogers led off by reaching base on an error before being sacrificed into scoring position on a bunt by Madi Armentrout. However, Murphy stranded the tying run on second after retiring the next two batters on an infield fly and ground out.

The Royals left seven runners on base through 4.1 innings before Murphy retired the final eight batters to pick up her third win and fourth complete game in her fifth start of the season.

Junior Mandy Butz totaled two of the five hits allowed by EMU's Natalye Graham who finished with eight strikeouts. Butz went 2-for-3 while Newton and Smith each were 1-for-3.

After being limited in game one, the Royals (6-5-1) erupted for a season-high 14 runs on 12 hits and three Green Terror errors in the second.

McDaniel jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on an RBI-single by senior Evie Craig and a two-run double to left by Routzahn. However, Eastern Mennonite responded with five runs in the bottom of the inning, four of which were unearned after two Green Terror errors.

McDaniel added three more runs in the top of the second to retake the lead, tying the game on a two-run double by sophomore Bella Sylvester before going back in front on an RBI-double by Craig.

The Royals tied the game for the third time with a sacrifice fly in the third before erupting for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth. Grace Fravel opened the scoring with her third home run of the season, a three-run shot to left, before EMU scored the final four following a two-out error that prolonged the inning and were unearned.

Trailing 14-6, the Green Terror provided the final margin on an RBI-double by sophomore Jessica Millard in the fifth and a two-run homer from junior Makayla Calamita, her first of the season and fourth of her career, in the sixth.

Millard finished with three hits, going 3-for-4, while Calamita and Craig each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Newton also had two hits, finishing 2-for-4 with three runs scored.

Senior Mel Grant took the loss after allowing nine runs on nine hits over 3.1 innings. Sophomore Kattie Hutchison pitched a scoreless fifth and sixth, holding the Royals hitless while walking just one, retiring six of the seven batters she faced.

McDaniel returns to action next Tuesday, March 28 when it travels to Messiah to take on the Falcons. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
