Sylvester Leads Softball Against TCNJ, Mississippi Women

MYRTLE BEACH, Fla. - McDaniel College softball sophomore Bella Sylvester totaled five hits as the Green Terror split games with the College of New Jersey and Mississippi University for Women Tuesday.

In two wins during spring break, the Green Terror (3-6) have outscored its opponents, 27-7.

Sylvester reached base six times in eight plate appearances, going 5-for-7 with a walk, four RBIs and two runs scored. She has had a hit in all eight of the team's games this season.

TCNJ 6, McDaniel 2

The first three batters of the game reached base for McDaniel, but back-to-back ground outs stranded two runners in scoring position and kept the team from taking the early lead.

The Green Terror loaded the bases in the second, but the Lions (5-1) worked out of the jam for the second consecutive inning as McDaniel left five runners on base over the first two innings, including four in scoring position.

TCNJ capitalized in the bottom of the second, striking first on a solo home run to right center by Camryn Kitchin to take a 1-0 lead.

Kitchin struck again with an RBI-single in the fourth before a three-run homer by Kaci Neveling increased the Lions' lead to 5-0.

Despite totaling eight hits, the Green Terror were held scoreless through five innings after they left eight runners on base, including five in scoring position. They finally broke through in the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits with an RBI-double by freshman Ryan Smith and an RBI-single by Sylvester to pull within three, 5-2.

However, that would be as close as McDaniel would get as TCNJ plated its final run with a two-out, RBI-single in the sixth. The Lions scored five of their six runs with two outs.

Sylvester went 2-for-4 with an RBI while graduate student Katy Newton was 3-for-4. Four players had multiple hits for McDaniel, including two each from Smith and junior Mandy Butz.

McDaniel 15, MUW 7

The second game of the day was a back-and-fourth affair as the two teams combined for 22 runs, 21 hits, nine walks and seven errors. There were also two ties and four lead changes.

The Owls (9-4) opened the game by scoring five runs in the top of the first, four of which were unearned. However, the Green Terror answered with six runs in the second to take the lead, highlighted by a three-run double from sophomore Olivia Dresser.

MUW would retake the lead, 7-6, after scoring a run in the fourth and one in the fifth before McDaniel answered in the bottom of the fifth with nine runs on six hits and three errors.

Butz initiated the rally with a two-run triple before scoring on a wild pitch. Sylvester drove in two runs with a single to left while Newton scored on a fielding error to put the Green Terror in front, 12-7. Sylvester scored on an RBI-single by junior Makayla Calamita before the final two runs came across following the Owls' third error of the inning.

Sylvester went 3-for-3 with a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored while Butz also totaled three hits, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.

Sophomore Kattie Hutchison made her first start inside the circle, scattering six hits over 3.0 innings while striking out three and allowing just one earned run. She was relieved by senior Parker Murphy who earned the win after allowing just three hits and one earned run over the final 2.0 innings.

McDaniel continues its participation in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Wednesday against Plattsburgh State and UMass Boston beginning at 11 a.m.
