Softball Drops Two Against Plattsburgh State, UMass Boston

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Timely hitting and strong opposing pitching proved to be the difference as the McDaniel College softball team dropped two games Wednesday in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.

The Green Terror (3-7) were limited to four runs on 10 hits with 15 strikeouts over the two games their defense was hampered by six errors which led to five unearned runs.

Plattsburgh State 4, McDaniel 2

Making the first start of her career, freshman Morgan Rogers held her own inside the circle against the Cardinals, registering her first complete game and scattering nine hits over 7.0 innings while striking out four and allowing just three earned runs.

After each team totaled one hit in their first at-bat, Plattsburgh took advantage of two wild pitches to score its first run in the second when Kristina Maggiacomo scored on an RBI-single by Rebecca Diller.

The Cardinals (2-1) maintained their one-run lead through the fifth until Diller doubled it with an RBI-double to left to score Maggiacomo for the second time. They would double it again with two more runs in the top of the seventh.

Trailing 4-0, McDaniel avoided the shutout with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning on RBI hits from senior Colleen Camburn and sophomore Bella Sylvester.

In addition to going 2-for-3 with two runs at the plate, Maggiacomo struck out six while limiting the Green Terror to seven hits over 7.0 innings inside the circle.

Camburn went 2-for-3 with one RBI while Sylvester was 2-for-4 with one RBI.

UMass Boston 9, McDaniel 2

After allowing the game's first run in the top of the first, the Green Terror responded with one each in the second and third to take a 2-1 lead.

However, the Beacons (5-1) scored two unearned runs in the fourth to regain its one-run lead before erupting for four runs in the fifth, including three on a home run to left by Amauri English to push their lead to 7-2.

UMass Boston added two more unearned runs in the sixth and seventh to provide the final margin.

Inside the circle, Bri Melchionda held McDaniel to just three hits and one earned run while striking out three.

Graduate student Katy Newton had one of the three hits for the Green Terror to extend her hit streak to six games.

McDaniel concludes competition in the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic on Thursday against Cairn and Lycoming.
