Strong First Half Leads Muhlenberg Past Men's Basketball

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Muhlenberg shot 50-percent from the floor in the first half while its top two scorers combined for 32 points in a 78-65 victory over the McDaniel College men's basketball team Saturday inside the Gill Center.

The Green Terror (8-12, 4-10 CC) trailed by 14 at the half, 44-30, after the Mules were 16-of-32 from the floor and Giovannni Rubino and Luke Gordos scored 16 points each.

Despite the halftime score, the first half featured four ties and three lead changes. McDaniel led 14-8 with 12:21 remaining following an offensive rebound and put back by junior Jahdel Darego.

With Muhlenberg (13-8, 8-6 CC) lead 21-20 with 8:28 to play, the visitors used a 16-4 run to expand that to 13 with 2:54 left. During that time, the Green Terror were just 1-of-7 from the floor with three turnovers while the Mules were 5-for-8 from the floor and 5-for-6 from the free throw line.

Sophomore Russell Dandridge scored 11 of his team-high 14 points in the first half while senior Carter Truby had seven.

In the second half, both teams combined to score 35 of 69 points from the free throw line as there were 32 fouls and 45 free throws attempted. Muhlenberg made 17-of-19 while McDaniel was 18-for-26. The Green Terror also scored 16 points off 11 Mule turnovers as they outscored the visitors by one.

A total of 11 players scored at least one point for McDaniel with six totaling at least seven. Darego finished with nine points while freshman Kevin Connelly also had nine to set a new career high. He scored seven of his points at the free throw line where he was 7-for-8.

Freshman David Kearney also had a career-high with seven points, including five from the free throw line as he went 5-for-6. Freshman Christian Taylor finished with seven points while grabbing a career-high six rebounds.

The Green Terror travel to Washington College on Tuesday to take on the Shoremen. Game time is at 8 p.m.
