HACKETTSTOWN, N.J. - William Paterson scored 16 of its 38 second-half points from the free throw line en route to a 72-63 victory over the McDaniel College men's basketball team Saturday in the championship game of the Cyclone Holiday Classic.
The Green Terror (5-5) led by as many as eight in the first half, but a 7-0 run midway through the second gave the Pioneers the lead for good, 52-45.
Sophomore
Jonas Sujeta totaled his second double double this season with 10 points and 10 rebounds while sophomore
David Kearney just missed his second-straight, finishing with a team-high 12 points and eight rebounds.
McDaniel led 36-34 at halftime and 38-34 after a layup by senior
Chuck Contee to start the second half. However, William Paterson scored seven of the next nine points to retake the lead and with the scored tied at 45-45 with 13:39 remaining, the Pioneers used a 7-0 run to take its largest of the game to that point.
The Green Terror would cut their deficit to one with 6:45 left following a three-point play by senior
Jahdel Darego, but five-straight points by William Paterson pushed its lead back to six with under five minutes remaining.
The Pioneers (6-7) stretched their lead to as many as 10 points and secured the win as they made nine of their last 10 free throw attempts over the final 1:14.
William Paterson went 16-of-21 from the free throw line in the second half and scored 14 points off eight McDaniel turnovers.
Senior
Jeong Hwang scored a season-high 10 points while Darego added a season-high seven. Junior
Lorin Hall added six points and five rebounds.
The Green Terror return to Centennial Conference play next Saturday, Jan. 6 at Franklin & Marshall. Tip-off is at 3 p.m. from the Mayser Center.
