Strouse, Taveras Lead McDaniel to First Conference Win

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Led by juniors Angalyn Strouse and Kathy Taveras, the McDaniel College volleyball team picked up its first Centennial Conference win of the season with a four-set win over Ursinus Saturday at the Gill Center.

The Green Terror (10-6, 1-2 CC) snapped a two-match losing streak against the Bears before dropping the final contest of a tri-match with Eastern Mennonite, falling to the Royals in straight sets.

The win against Ursinus was the 10th of the season for McDaniel, its first double-digit win total since 2019 when the team went 16-13.

McDaniel 3, Ursinus 1 (25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 25-22)

The Green Terror showed out in the first match of the day. Strouse led the offense with 17 kills while sophomores Kailey Young and Kenzie Mitchell also finished with double-digit kills. Taveras anchored the defense with 23 digs. Freshman Hannah Waters and senior Tatiana Hamilton combined for 37 assists.

McDaniel took the early lead with two service aces from sophomore Samantha Fadel. The Bears stayed within striking distance, but the Green Terror were able to capitalize on Ursinus errors and stretch the lead to five. Young and Strouse converted back-to-back kills before the home team went on a six-point run to close out the first set with a 10-point victory.

Ursinus (8-9, 1-2 CC) responded in the second set, scoring the first seven points. The Bears held a five-point lead throughout the set and eventually stretched it to 18-9. McDaniel pulled within five, but could not overcome the deficit and fell by five.

Young helped build the Green Terror lead in the third set with two-straight kills. Freshman Reese Beck connected for an ace, followed by a pair of kills from Strouse as McDaniel led, 19-13. The score remained close with both teams trading points, but the Bears made two critical errors late, leading to a two-point win for the Green Terror.

The fourth set began with both teams scoring, but McDaniel scored five-straight with Waters tallying a pair of aces. Ursinus closed the gap to 19-15, but Strouse got hot and connected on a trio of kills to key a three-point win.

Eastern Mennonite 3, McDaniel 0 (25-22, 25-23, 25-20)

In the final match of the day, the Royals (7-11) jumped on McDaniel early and won in three sets. In the first, Eastern Mennonite built a 17-12 lead before the Green Terror battled back to tie it at 17-17. However, the Royals went on a late run to pull away for a three-point victory.

The second set was a back-and-forth with McDaniel holding an 18-13 lead, but Eastern Mennonite rallied to retake the lead and edge out a two-point win.

Eastern Mennonite jumped out to an early lead in the third and never looked back en route to a five-point victory.

McDaniel concludes a four-match home stand on Wednesday when it hosts Dickinson for a 7 p.m. match inside the Gill Center.
