Roberts, Hamilton Lead Volleyball Versus Fords on Senior Day

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Senior Nia Roberts totaled seven kills and a .353 hitting percentage while senior Tatiana Hamilton had 13 assists to lead the McDaniel College volleyball team in a three-set loss to Haverford Saturday on Senior Day.

Prior to the match, the Green Terror (10-12, 1-7 CC) honored Roberts, Hamilton and senior Lauren Guyer who were playing in the final home match of their career. In three-plus years, the trio has appeared in 180 matches while boasting a 3.941 combined grade-point average.

McDaniel jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the first set before an 8-2 run gave the Fords a four-point lead they would not relinquish. They stretched their advantage to as many as 10, taking advantage of seven Green Terror attack errors and five reception errors en route to a 25-13 victory. Haverford also totaled 11 kills and a .318 hitting percentage.

Led by six kills from Taylor Jones, Haverford (10-12, 5-3 CC) led from start to finish in the second set, taking a 20-5 advantage on a kill by Eliana Brown. McDaniel scored eight of the next 12 points, including two on kills by freshman Hannah Waters and sophomore Kenzie Mitchell, but that would be as close as the team could get as the Fords posted another 25-13 win on block assists by Jones and Kayla Chu.

The third set featured 10 ties and seven lead changes ans the Green Terror looked to avoid the sweep. Haverford took a 4-2 advantage before back-to-back kills by Roberts tied the set for the third time. Tied at 10-10, McDaniel used a quick 3-0 run to take its largest lead before the Fords rallied to tie it at 15-15 on a kill by Jones.

The two teams went back-and-forth until the visitors snuck out in front, 22-18. The Green Terror pulled within one on a service ace by sophomore Kailey Young, but Haverford scored three of the final four points on McDaniel attack errors to clinch the match, 25-22.

Mitchell had a match-high 13 kills, including seven in the third set where Roberts totaled five of her seven. Waters also had 13 assists while junior Kathy Taveras added a match-high 12 digs.

The Green Terror conclude their 2023 season with two Centennial Conference road matches next week beginning Wednesday at Franklin & Marshall.
