Men's Soccer Stays Unbeaten With 2-0 Win at Marywood

SCRANTON, Pa. - The McDaniel College men's soccer team continued their unselfish play on Wednesday as two more players found the scoring column in a 2-0 road win at Marywood.

The Green Terror (3-0-0) have started the season with three consecutive wins for the second time in the last three seasons. In 2019, the team began 9-0 en route to an appearance in the quarterfinals of the ECAC Men's Soccer Championship. That year was also the last time the team had three-straight shutouts after blanking Albright (4-0 on Sept. 10), Wesley (1-0 on Sept. 14) and Goucher (1-0 on Sept. 17).

Both defenses controlled the tempo early with the game being contested primarily around midfield. As McDaniel found its rhythm, senior Gage Souder and freshman Jorge Herrera started to find gaps in the Pacers' defense.

Marywood (2-1-0) had a pair of chances in the opening half, but the Green Terror back line kept up the pressure and senior Austin Heid stopped the lone shot on goal for his only save of the half.

As the tightly contested first half came to a close, sophomore Justin Winborne-Freeman streaked down the left side of the Marywood defense. Just inside the box, he placed a volley at the feet of freshman Carver Neary who chipped it past the keeper for the first goal of the game and the first of his career.

McDaniel maintained its 1-0 lead into the break.

The Green Terror kept their foot on the pedal out of halftime. After outshooting Marywood, 8-2, in the first 45 minutes, they continued that trend with another 10 shots in the second, including three that almost found the back of the net. Meanwhile, sophomore Matt Bowes and freshman Conor Najera kept the Pacers on edge throughout the second half, never letting them find a rhythm or a lane to create a scoring opportunity.

In the 79th minute, Herrera took control of the ball at midfield and placed a perfect through-ball to graduate student Nick Starr who finished off a deflection from the Marywood keeper to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

McDaniel held on the rest of the way despite a chippy matchup that featured three yellow cards and 35 fouls.

The Green Terror host Hood on Saturday in their home opener. Kickoff is slated for 4 p.m. following the women's game versus York (Pa.).
