Westminster, Md. - McDaniel opened up the season in a five set match that saw opportunities for both teams.
The Green Terror took an early lead in the first set. After a kill by Freshman
Jayda Patterson, McDaniel had an 8-5 lead. The Seahawks regrouped and scored the next five points to take the lead. From there both teams traded points when Junior
Abigail Cook found an opening in the defense to tie the game at 15-all. After a kill by Mesha Shupe, the Seahawks put together another five point run and never looked back winning the first set 25-16.
The next two sets were controlled by McDaniel.
Samantha Fadel had a pair of serving runs in the second set to give the Green Terror a comfortable lead. On the final point of the set,
Tatiana Hamilton found a leaping
Angalyn Strouse who connected on one of her team leading13 kills to win the set 25-17. In the third set, both teams battled to a 13-all tie before Hamilton stretched the lead to five with a pair of aces. St. Mary's cut the lead to two, but the McDaniel defense held firm and
Lauren Guyer placed the final point in the Seahawks back row to take the set 25-20.
As the fourth set began, St. Mary's jumped out to an early six point lead. McDaniel never found its rhythm and fell to the Seahawks 25-15. With the match heading to a fifth and final set, Nicole Gibson helped the Seahawks take a quick three point lead. McDaniel responded and cut the lead to one. With St. Mary's leading 11-10, Nancy Slaughter tallied a kill and block to extend the lead. St. Mary's held on after that to win the match 3-2.
Tatiana Hamilton led the way for McDaniel with 37 assists.
Kathy Taveras anchored the defense with 10 digs.
McDaniel heads to Notre Dame (Md.) to take on the Gators. The match is scheduled for 7 P.M. on Wednesday.
