WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College football junior
Hunter Sigler had a career-high 121 yards receiving while senior
William Looney hit a career-long 43-yard field goal in the team's 37-27 loss to Catholic Saturday at Gill Stadium.
The Green Terror (0-1) opened its 127th season of football, facing off against the Cardinals for the 18th time in last 19 seasons.
Sigler registered his first career 100-yard receiving performance on just six catches, an average of 20.2 yards per catch. He had four catches for 104 yards in the second half and is the third different Green Terror to compile 100 receiving yards in a game over the last two seasons.
Meanwhile, Looney was 2-for-2 on field goal attempts, connecting on a 43-yard attempt with 7:19 remaining in the first quarter to give McDaniel a 3-0 lead. He was also 3-for-3 on extra points.
The Green Terror scored the game's first 13 points, including 10 off turnovers. They scored on four of their first five drives and led 20-3 with 8:49 left in the second quarter.
After Looney put the team ahead early, the defense forced two Catholic fumbles on back-to-back drives and converted both into scores. Senior
Trent Gaskins found the end zone on a two-yard run before Looney added a 29-yard field goal to give McDaniel a 13-0 advantage at the end of the opening quarter.
The Cardinals finally got on the board with a 41-yard field goal to begin the second quarter before Gaskins added his second touchdown with another two-yard run.
As the Green Terror led by 17, they had totaled 137 yards of total offense for an average of 4.6 yards per play, while holding Catholic to just 47 yards and forcing two turnovers and one punt.
However, Gaskins' two-yard run with 8:49 left in the second would be the last score for McDaniel until late in the fourth quarter as the Cardinals scored 34 unanswered points to take a 37-20 lead. Over their next seven drives, the Green Terror were held to 74 yards, four punts and two turnovers.
Gaskins added his third touchdown run of the game with 2:18 remaining as he finished the game with 52 yards rushing on 15 carries. The sophomore tandem of
