No. 19 Women's Soccer Battles in Season Opener

Box Score VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The McDaniel College women's soccer team battled Virginia Wesleyan in a defensive struggle Friday night, falling 1-0 in the second game of the Marlin Invitational.

The 19th-ranked Green Terror (0-1) fell for just the third time in their last 26 games as they have posted a 22-3-1 record dating back to a 1-0 win over Penn State Behrend on Nov. 16, 2019.

The first half started with both defenses setting the tone early. McDaniel had the first opportunity of the night when sophomore Jessica Weinoldt took a shot in the second minute, but Marlin goalie Rachel Quigley corralled the ball for one of her seven saves on the night.

The Green Terror had a pair of shots after that, but could not capitalize. Led by two saves from graduate student Katherine Carstensen, the defense held Virginia Wesleyan scoreless through the first 45 minutes.

The Marlins (1-0) started to press on the offensive side to begin the second half before Alexis Miller found Shyenne Diaz who converted for the game's only goal in the 62nd minute.

McDaniel out-shot Virginia Wesleyan, 8-5 in the second half, but could not get the equalizer as Quigley had five saves. Carstensen finished with five saves for the Green Terror while Weinoldt registered five shots on goal.

McDaniel takes on No. 1 and defending national champion Christopher Newport on Sunday. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
