Women's Soccer Erupts for Three Goals in Home Opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College women's soccer team found the back of the net three times Saturday as the Green Terror picked up their first win with a 3-0 victory against York (PA) in their home opener.

McDaniel (1-1-2) opened up the first half with a flurry of chances. Less than one minute into the game, sophomore Olivia Moskunas created space, but the shot was saved by keeper Jacqueline Keogh. Senior Taylor Clawson ripped off a pair of shots just after that, but could not capitalize.

The Green Terror kept up the pressure and would not allow the Spartans to advance past midfield. In the 18th minute, senior Kiersten Crowley collected the ball just outside the box and sent a shot off the crossbar. After the shot, McDaniel was awarded a corner where junior Allison Storm lined up the cross and found Crowley open again. This time, Crowley blasted a low line drive just past the outstretched hand of the Spartan keeper to break the scoreless tie.

The Spartans (2-2) regrouped and started to create some opportunities on the offensive end. Just before halftime, Anna Morton took a shot that found an opening in the lower left corner, but McDaniel goalkeeper Katherine Carstensen reached out and made the save. McDaniel went into the break up 1-0.

As the second half began, Green Terror picked up right where they left off. Controlling the possession and moving forward into the attacking third, McDaniel created more and more chances. After a cross into the box, a York defender went up to head it, but redirected it into her own goal to put the Green Terror in front, 2-0.

Later in the half, junior Elaina Kluttz controlled possession and streaked down the right side of the field. She was able to get around her defender and placed a perfect volley into the box as Taylor Clawson cut from the left side. Clawson played it off her left foot and finished it for her first goal of the season.

The Spartans tried to respond, but the McDaniel defense held firm and did not allow a shot in the final 30 minutes of action. Graduate student Jules Dotterweich and senior Ashley Thomas closed the passing lanes all afternoon to keep the Spartans off the board and help the Green Terror post their third-straight shutout.

McDaniel heads to Grantham, Pa. on Wednesday to take on Messiah. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
