THE SKINNY
Swarthmore, ranked 17th in the latest D3hoops.com poll, methodically built an 18-point halftime lead over the final 12 minutes of the first half en route to an 85-49 win over McDaniel.
THE LEADERS
• Mike Wallace (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum School) led the Green Terror with 14 points to go with four rebounds and three assists.
• Charles Contee (Huntingtown, Md./Huntingtown) chipped in 10 points, including hitting seven of his eight free-throw attempts.
FOR THE FOES
• Vinny DeAngelo and Conor Harkins led a balanced attack for the Garnet with 13 points each.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• The first eight minutes of the game featured seven lead changes with neither team leading more than two points, which came on Kaelen Kanealey's (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) opening jumper of the game 86 seconds into the contest. From there neither team led by more than a point before a George Visconti 3-pointer gave Swarthmore an 11-9 edge with 12:12 to play. That triple sparked a 19-4 stretch over the next 7 minutes, 23 seconds. A Mike Wallace jumper and Josh Sproul (Princess Anne, Md./Washington Academy) free throw closed the deficit to 27-16 but the Garnet scored the final seven points of the half for a 34-16 lead.
• Vinny DeAngleo connected on a jumper on the opening possession of the second half to push the lead to 20 for the first time but Charles Contee responded with a 3-pointer. McDaniel closed to within 41-26 on a Sproul three-point play with 17:06 showing but the Garnett netted the next eight points to open up a 23-point lead just 2:35 later before slowly pulling away for the win.
THE INSIDE STORY
• The Garnet shot 55.8 percent for the game, including 60 percent in the first half.
• McDaniel finished with a 32-30 edge in rebounding.
• Swarthmore clinched a playoff spot with the victory and remains a game out of the top spot in the conference entering the final week of play.
