COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The McDaniel College men's soccer team played well in all facets to secure a win in the season finale at Ursinus Saturday, posting a 3-2 victory at Patterson Field.
Ursinus (4-10-3, 0-8-1 CC) got on the board early after being awarded a penalty kick in the ninth minute. Aidan O'Malley stepped up and converted the goal to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.
After that early goal, McDaniel (10-4-3, 2-4-3 CC) began to settle in, taking a pair of shots by graduate student
Nick Starr to test the Bears defense.
In the 19th minute, senior
Gage Souder lined up a free kick from 40 yards out. He sent in a beautiful ball that landed in a spot where the goalie was forced to come out and punch it away, but freshman
Conor Najera came flying in and headed it into the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
The Green Terror kept up the pressure with two more scoring opportunities in the first 30 minutes, but the Bears' keeper made saves on both attempts.
As the half continued, sophomore
Brandon Morse sent a long ball into the box that was headed by Starr to the far corner of the box. Sophomore
Justin Winborne-Freeman was the first one to the ball and was able to draw a penalty kick. Starr took the PK and calmly placed it in the far right corner of the goal to give McDaniel the lead, 2-1.
Just a few minutes later, Ursinus got right back into the game when O'Malley found Marco Grenda to tie the game at 2-2.
Despite surrendering a pair of first half goals, senior
Austin Heid came up big multiple times in the first half, making four crucial saves for McDaniel, including two just before intermission.
Both teams traded shots coming out of halftime and had plenty of chances to score in a wide open second half. Morse and senior
Farmer Stubblefield each ripped a shot, but both were saved.
In a chippy second half, McDaniel was given two yellow cards, but continued to play aggressively.
In the 78th minute, the Green Terror were awarded a corner. Souder lined up the kick and sent it curving to the near post where sophomore
Matt Bowes leapt up and headed the ball into ther back of the net for his first goal of the season and what proved to be the game-winner.
The Green Terror played solid defense the rest of the way, but Ursinus was able to create one last scoring chance as time was expiring. In the 88th minute, Grenda got open and headed the ball to an open spot in the goal, but Heid anticipated the shot and made the game-saving stop to give McDaniel its 10th win on the year.
The Green Terror finished the season with a 10-4-3 record, their third 10-win season in the last five under head coach
Steve Corrieri.
