WESTMINSTER, Md. - Washington scored in the final seconds to edge McDaniel 1-0 on Senior Day.
In a first half where both offenses struggled to keep possession, Washington (5-4-6, 4-1-3 CC) created the first scoring opportunity when Alex Coster ripped a shot from outside the box.
Austin Heid read the shot and dove to his right, deflecting the ball out of bounds for an outstanding save.
The defensive struggle continued for most of the opening period.
Jared Edge and
Tyler Reid anchored the back line for the Green Terror (8-4-2, 1-4-2 CC). Reid communicated with defense to keep the potent Shoremen offense in check. McDaniel held Washington to three shots in the first half.
In the 26th minute, the Green Terror had their best scoring opportunity of the day off a set piece. Midfielder
Brandon Morse directed a pass deep in the box with his head to the far right corner, but the Washington keeper made a diving save to keep the deadlock going.
With less than 10 minute left in the half, Washington came close to scoring again, but
Heid came up clutch once again when he saved a shot from Eric Gwadz. The shot deflected right back to Gwadz who lined up another attempt, but
Heid anticipated the follow up and denied the Shoremen once again.
Washington opened up the second half with more aggressive play. They drew a pair of yellow cards within a two-minute period, and continued to press the McDaniel team at every opportunity. The Shoremen out shot McDaniel 7-1 in the second half, but could not find the back of the net.
As time began to expire the Shoremen drew one final corner. The ball was sent into the box where Chris Comber deflected it towards the keeper. Washington forward Eric Gwadz happened to be in the right place at the right time and scored the winning goal with less than a minute left in the game. Washington held on to win 1-0.
McDaniel returns to action on Tuesday against Juniata. The match is scheduled for 3:30 P.M.
