COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - McDaniel College football junior
Hunter Sigler had 167 yards receiving and two touchdowns in a 56-17 loss at Ursinus Friday night at Patterson Field.
Sigler needed just six catches to post the second 100-yard performance of his career and second this season. He averaged 27.8 yards per catch and recorded the most receiving yards by a Green Terror since Sept. 7, 2002 when Joey Ellis had nine catches for 176 yards against Bridgewater (Va.).
Sigler, who had six catches for 121 yards in the season opener versus Catholic, leads the Centennial Conference with an average of 20.1 yards per catch this season and ranks second with 482 yards receiving.
After Ursinus (4-2, 3-2 CC) scored a touchdown on the game's first possession, McDaniel (2-4, 2-3 CC) responded with a 29-yard field from senior
William Looney with 8:01 remaining in the first quarter.
The Bears scored on its first four possessions and led 28-3 before Sigler scored on a 15-yard pass from sophomore
Jared Snow to cap an 8-play, 75-yard drive with 8:01 left in the second.
The Green Terror defense forced an Ursinus punt on its ensuing possession, but a 38-yard punt by Billy Cook was downed at the 1-yard line, pinning McDaniel deep in its own territory. Seven plays later, the Bears recovered a Green Terror fumble before converting it into seven points on the next play to increase their lead to 35-10 with 3:49 to play in the first half.
On the next to last play of the half, junior
Jevin Tranquillo intercepted a Jack Psenicska pass at the McDaniel 14-yard line and returned it 56 yards to the Ursinus 30, but an illegal substitution negated the play and allowed the Bears to run out the clock and take their 25-point lead into halftime.
Ursinus scored a touchdown on its final three drives of the third quarter to lead 56-10 before Snow found Sigler from 17 yards out for his second touchdown of the game with 13:57 remaining in the fourth quarter, capping a 5-play, 94-yard drive to provide the final margin. Sigler accounted for 60 yards on the drive with receptions of 43 and 17 yards.
Snow completed 11-of-22 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns while sophomore
Jeremiah Maxwell was 2-for-2 for 81 yards. Senior
Trent Gaskins carried the ball 13 times for 62 yards.
McDaniel returns home to face No. 20 Susquehanna next Saturday, Oct. 22 at Gill Stadium. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
