WESTMINSTER, Md. - In a hard-fought matchup between a pair of Centennial Conference foes, McDaniel scored early and played great defense to secure a 1-0 win over Swarthmore on Homecoming.
The Green Terror (7-2-1, 1-21 CC) hadn't beaten Swarthmore since 2005, but this year's team came out aggressive and attacked the Garnet defense from the opening whistle.Â
In the 17th minute,Â
Brandon Morse attempted the first shot of the game after finding an opening in the defense, but could not convert.
As the half continued, Swarthmore (6-3-1, 1-21 CC) tried to establish their physical presence, but McDaniel matched their intensity all over the field. Both teams combined for 26 fouls and six yellow cards on the day.
After a yellow card to Swarthmore's Sean Nolan, McDaniel earned a corner kick. Senior midfielder
Gage Souder lined up the kick and sent it to the short post where a cutting
Carver Neary jumped up above the Garnet defense and redirected it with his head inside the far post to break the deadlock.
McDaniel continued to pressure the Garnet players all over the field. Sophomore defender
Jared Edge, along with
Tyler Reid,
Matt Bowes, and
Noah Rodriguez controlled the back line for McDaniel.Â
Swarthmore attempted 11 shots, but only one was on target and
Austin Heid made the save to keep the shutout alive.
The Garnet began to attack as the second half began. They let loose four shots in as many minutes, but could not find the back of the net. Edge and Bowes did a great job of cutting off their shooting angles and making it difficult for the Swarthmore offense to operate.Â
McDaniel stayed firm and tallied another clean sheet, its seventh of the season in nine games.
The Green Terror return to action on Wednesday at home against Christendom. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m.
