WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College football sophomore
Eric Grinwis threw for two scores and ran for another as the Green Terror posted a 21-13 victory over Dickinson on Homecoming at Rembert Field at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium.
McDaniel (2-3, 2-2 CC) snapped a four-game losing streak against the Red Devils, posting their first win since Oct. 22, 2016 when it posted a 14-7 victory, also on Homecoming.
Grinwis completed 20-of-27 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns while also scoring on a 2-yard run late in the second quarter.
After a slow start by both teams, Dickinson (1-4, 1-3 CC) scored first on a 22-yard field goal by Matt Moroz with 4:02 remaining in the second quarter.
On their ensuing drive, Grinwis found junior
Hunter Sigler from 46 yards out, capping a 7-play, 75-yard drive to put the Green Terror in front to stay, 6-3. However, a strip sack by senior
Justin Morsell on the second play of the Red Devils' next possession, gave McDaniel the ball first-and-goal at the 8-yard line with 32 seconds to play in the first half.
Three plays later, Grinwis scored on a 2-yard run to put the Green Terror in front by nine as they scored 12 points in a span of just 45 seconds to take a 12-3 halftime lead.
McDaniel scored 15 points off five Dickinson turnovers. Sigler and Grinwis connected for a second time with 5:03 remaining in the third quarter following the first of two interceptions by senior
Earl Spicer.
In the fourth, senior
William Looney hit a 28-yard field goal with 12:40 to play to put the Green Terror in front, 21-10, after a bad snap by the Red Devils was recovered by freshman
Aiden Bell at the Dickinson 9-yard line.
Led by Spicer, Morsell and graduate student
Habeeb Baba, the McDaniel defense held the Red Devils to just 88 yards passing on 10-of-28 passing while totaling three interceptions and three sacks. Spicer had 11 tackles, 2.0 for loss, four pass breakups and two interceptions.
Morsell had five tackles, 2.0 for loss, one sack and one forced fumble while Baba had 10 tackles and two pass breakups.
Sigler had three catches for 81 yards and two touchdowns and senior
Sean Carter had nine catches for 79 yards.
The Green Terror carry a win into their bye week next week before they return to action on Friday, Oct. 14 at Ursinus. Kickoff from Patterson Field in Collegeville, Pa. is at 7 p.m.
