FOR THE FOES
• Serena Pluta led the Shorewomen with 22 points and seven rebounds.
• Joy Sanders contributed 16 points and seven rebounds.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• Serena Pluta broke a 2-minute, 59-second scoreless drought to start the game before Katie Klein (Port Charlotte, Fla./Imagine School at North Point) responded with a layup at the other end. Baskets from Karry Kelliher and Alyssa Hawes opened up a 6-2 Washington lead with 4:21 to play in the opening quarter. Baskets from three different McDaniel players keyed a 7-2 counter that put the visitors in front 9-8 with 1:53 showing. Four points from Pluta in the final 95 seconds gave the hosts a 12-9 edge.
• The run extended to 11-0 to take a double-digit lead 2:32 into the second period before the first of three Josey Klingenberg 3-pointers started an 8-0 run that closed the deficit to two nearly two minutes later. Trailing 23-20, a Mallory Conroy jumper and triples from Klingenberg and Liliana Overcash (Bend, Ore./Mountain View) in a 56-second stretch gave the Green Terror a 25-23 lead with 2:01 to play. Rachel Theim scored out of a timeout to close the deficit to three at the break.
• McDaniel netted the first five points of the third quarter to open up 33-25 lead. The third quarter lead swelled as large as 44-33 on a Conroy layup with 54 ticks left. A Crystal Jones 3-pointer, though, on the other end made it a single-digit game after 30 minutes.
• Klingenberg stretched the lead back to 10 on the opening possession of the fourth quarter but Washington netted the next nine point to close to within 46-45 with 4:30 to play. A Klingenberg trey halted a 5-minute, 31-second scoring drought and pushed the lead back to four. Trailing 51-47, Lizzie Hudock hit a layup with 2:34 on the clock and Andrea Prestianne canned two free throws with 1:58 before neither team could convert another point the rest of regulation.
• Klein drained a 3-pointer 31 seconds into overtime and the lead oscillated between one and three points before a Pluta layup with 56 seconds gave the Shorewomen a 59-58 edge. Meggie Burgess responded with a jumper to go back in front by one. Klein hit the second of two free throws with 14 seconds left to make it a two-point lead. Fouled with 6.2 seconds left, Joy Sanders missed the first of two free throws then intentionally bounced the second attempt off the front of the rim, collected her own miss and hit the short jumper to tie the game with 4.4 seconds left.
• Neither team scored for the first 2:48 of the second overtime before layups from Pluta and Sanders gave the hosts a 65-61 lead with 2:05 to play. Klingenberg responded with a jumper but that's as close as the Green Terror would get the rest of the way.
