Burgess opens women's basketball season with 17 points in road win

THE SKINNY STORY
McDaniel outscored Goucher 13-5 in the second quarter to open up a 15-point lead and ultimately finished off a season-opening victory, 52-35.

THE LEADERS
Meggie Burgess (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) led the Green Terror with 17 points to go with eight rebounds.
• Natalie Mehl (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) added nine points.

FOR THE FOES
• Julia Cavoli led the Gophers with 10 points.
• Kyani Quaries led the way on the glass with 11 rebounds.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• Layups from Julia Ryan (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa) and Ellie Connelly (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) staked McDaniel to a 4-0 lead in the first 1:13 of the contest. Goucher closed to within 8-7 on a Kyani Quaries layup with 4:57 remaining in the first quarter but a Meggie Burgess steal-and-jumper sparked a 6-0 burst that opened up a 14-7 lead with 1:32 showing. Alayna McFadden and Ellie Connelly traded three points each in the final minute for a 17-10 advantage after 10 minutes.
• Five straight Goucher points to start the second quarter, including a Julia Cavoli three-point play, closed the margin to two but a Connelly layup with 7:09 on the clock sparked a 13-0 close to the half and pushed the lead to 30-15 at the intermission. Natalie Mehl hit a pair of triples in the run.
• Cavoli snapped the scoring drought 47 seconds into the third quarter but the Gophers would get no closer the rest of the way after an Ellie Glass (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove Area) layup and Burgess 3-pointer pushed the lead to 18 two minutes later. A Burgess layup made it a 20-point game for the first time at 40-20 with 4:04 showing en route to a 42-23 lead entering the final quarter.
• McDaniel extended the lead to 50-23 midway through the second quarter before Goucher scored 13 of the final 15 points of the game.

THE INSIDE STORY
Mallory Conroy (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) led the way on the glass for the Green Terror, matching Meggie Burgess with eight rebounds. As a team, McDaniel finished with a 47-41 advantage on the boards.
• Josey Klingenberg (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) handed out five assists to go with two steals, three points and five rebounds.
• The 17 points and eight rebounds for Burgess were both career bests.

McDaniel returns to action at Elizabethtown on Monday. Game time is 7 p.m.
