THE SKINNY STORY
Hood built a 15-point lead in the first half before staving off a McDaniel rally late in the first half and again in the second half for a 76-73 win at the Pride of Maryland Tournament hosted by Stevenson.
THE LEADERS
• David Smoot III (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore City College) led the Green Terror with 17 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
• Josh Sproul (Princess Anne, Md./Washington Academy) recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
FOR THE FOES
• Christopher Smalls led the Blazers with 17 points and seven rebounds.
• Bryce Butler added 17 points of his own to go along with five rebounds and six steals.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• A Carter Truby (Sykesville, Md./Century) 3-pointer and Mike Wallace (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum School) jumper staked McDaniel to a 5-0 lead in the game's first 1:04. A pair of Trumaine Strickland jumpers around a Christopher Smalls 3-pointer gave Hood a lead it would not relinquish just 1 minute, 55 seconds later. With a 10-9 edge, Soren Almquist hit a triple to spark a 14-4 run to open up a double-digit lead midway through the half. Five straight points from David Smoot III closed the deficit to 18-13 but the Blazers scored 11 of the next 13 to take its largest lead at 35-20 with 4:32 to play. The Green Terror scored the final five points of the half to trim the deficit to 39-33 at the break.
• A Josh Sproul 3-pointer out of intermission made it a three-point game. Kaelen Kanealey (Rocherster, N.Y./Irondequoit) hit a jumper to draw McDaniel even at 47-all with 12:26 to play. Tied at 54-all with 8:39 showing, Bryce Butler scored five straight and Smalls added a triple to push the lead back to eight just 1:41 later. The lead swelled back to 11 on a Gamson Linton 3-pointer with 2:45 to play but a Sproul jumper and Truby trey made it a 71-65 game with 1:05 to play. Smalls responded with a traditional three-point play before Dragan Hornatko (Baltimore, Md./Glenelg Country Day School) canned a triple with 20 ticks left. A Kanealey layup off a turnover made it a four-point game but Mason Wang hit a jumper out of the inbounds to push the lead back to six. Truby nailed his fourth 3-pointer of the game to set the final margin just before the final horn.
THE INSIDE STORY
• The Green Terror finished with a 45-30 rebounding advantage.
• Mike Wallace handed out seven assists to go with his nine points.
• Carter Truby finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
• Kaelen Kanealey added a season-best 15 points.
