Conroy records double-double in tournament finale

THE SKINNY
Catholic scored seven straight points in the latter half of the fourth quarter to top McDaniel 45-43 in the championship game of the Rebecca Martin Memorial Tip-Off Tournament.

THE LEADERS
Mallory Conroy (Ellicott City, Md./Marriotts Ridge) led the Green Terror with a double-double, scoring 10 points to go with 12 rebounds. She also had two blocked shots.

FOR THE FOES
• Carly Mulvaney led the Cardinals with 12 points and seven rebounds to earn the tournament's most outstanding player honors.

THE REST OF THE STORY
• Four straight points from Mallory Conroy gave McDaniel a 7-4 lead with 4:44 to play in the opening quarter but five points from Carly Mulvaney keyed a 7-0 counter for an 11-7 lead 1:42 later. Ellie Connelly (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) hit a layup as the first quarter expired to make it a two-point game.
• Six straight Green Terror points in the second quarter gave the hosts a 16-13 edge before Luca Mamula snapped a nearly five-minute scoring drought. The teams traded baskets before a Mamula three-point play with 34 ticks left gave Catholic a 20-18 edge at the break.
• Josey Klingenberg (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) hit a jumper on the opening possession of the third quarter to tie the game at 20. The Cardinals netted the next five. Six straight McDaniel points gave the Green Terror a 28-27 edge with 3:15 to play in the quarter before the teams traded scoring runs in the final minutes of the quarter and two Conroy free throws made it a 32-31 McDaniel lead after three quarters.
• Connelly extended the lead to three on the first possession of the fourth quarter. Meggie Burgess (Olney, Md./Good Counsel) made it a 38-35 game with 6:20 to play in the final period before McDaniel went the next 5:40 without a point. Catholic scored eight straight during the stretch until jumpers from Natalie Mehl (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) and Conroy trimmed the margin to 44-43 with 3.2 seconds remaining. Amanda Johnson made the second of two free throws to escape with the two-point win.

THE INSIDE STORY
• McDaniel finished with a 40-34 rebounding advantage.
• Josey Klingenberg had six assists and four steals to go with her six points and four rebounds.

McDaniel returns to action at home against York (Pa.) on Thursday. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
