Yeomans nets 12 in balanced win

Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel scored the final nine points of the first half to take a 33-27 lead into the break and carried that momentum to a 63-43 Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball victory over Swarthmore on Tuesday.

Melanie Yeomans (Myersville, Md./South Hagerstown) led a balanced attack for the Green Terror (6-6, 4-3 CC) with 12 points. Renie Tsomos (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) added 11 points and Liv Storer (Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia/Galen Catholic College) chipped in 10 to round out a trio of double-digit scorers.

Raina Williams led the Garnet (1-9, 0-7 CC) with 12 points.

Trailing 27-24 with 2:33 to play in the second quarter, Tsomos finished a putback and then Libby Bowles (Gaithersburg, Md./Damasus) connected on a layup to give the hosts the lead for good a minute later.

Yeomans drained the only McDaniel 3-pointer of the first half with 33 ticks remaining to make it a four-point game before Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to six.

Baskets from Audra Woodside and Williams in the first 1:11 of the second half trimmed the deficit to two.

Swarthmore closed to within 36-35 before the Green Terror finished the quarter on a 15-0 run.

The streak extended to 20 straight before two Woodside free throws snapped an 11-minute, 13-second scoring drought.

Each team built a four-point lead in the first quarter before three points from Storer and a Jasmine Scott (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) fast-break layup gave the hosts an 18-15 lead entering the second quarter.

McDaniel built a seven-point advantage before the Garnet went on a 10-0 run to take its final lead of the game.

Yeomas added three assists and three steals while Storer pulled down a team-best five rebounds.

McDaniel returns to action at Haverford on Thursday. Game time is 6 p.m.
