Edelstein records 29 assists, eight aces in sweep

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel recorded a pair of sweeps, including defeating Washington (Md.) 3-0 in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Saturday.

Gayle Edelstein (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) led the Green Terror (14-1, 3-0 CC) on the day, recording 29 assists and adding eight aces and nine digs.

McDaniel topped the Shorewomen (12-5, 1-3 CC) by scores of 25-23, 25-13 and 25-16 before toppling Marywood, 25-18, 25-11, 25-17.

Kylie Peets led Washington with six kills.

The Shorewomen built a 20-14 lead in the first set before three straight errors closed the deficit to 20-17. A Teryn Rath (Grass Valley, Calif./Bear River) kill and Edelstein ace closed the margin to one before an Allie Lugar (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) and Hayley Mills (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) block evened the match.

The run stretched to seven straight points before the teams traded errors. Clinging to a 24-23 lead, Lugar put down an Edelstein set for a 1-0 lead in the match.

McDaniel jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set and gradually grew the lead into a 12-point win.

Back-to-back Emma Lorenzen (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) kills helped the Green Terror jump out to a 7-2 lead in the third set.

Marlowe Embry (Milpitas, Calif./J.H. Pitman) led the attack with 13 kills while adding 12 digs for her sixth double-double of the year.

Taylor Bauman (Charlottesville, Va./Abermarle) added 14 digs. Mills and Lugar chipped in five and four blocks, respectively.

Against Marywood, the first set was tied at 7-all before kills from Lauren Wells (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) and Embry sparked a 9-1 run that gave the hosts control of the set.

The Green Terror jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the second set before four straight Bauman aces keyed a 7-0 run late.

The third set featured six ties and two lead changes before an Edelstein ace keyed a 4-0 run that turned an 10-9 edge into a 14-9 lead.

Embry and Lugar led the attack with eight kills each. In addition to Edelstein's five aces, Bauman added four as part of a 15-ace day for the team. Lorenzen added five blocks while Wells had four.

The Green Terror returns to action at Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
