Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel built a 31-16 halftime lead en route to a 69-53 victory over Goucher in non-conference men's basketball action on Saturday.
Austin Cannon (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) led the Green Terror (2-6) with 19 points while Benjamin Young (Grasonville, Md./Kent Island) added a season-best 16 points. DJ Harper (Glenn Dale, Md./Riverdale Baptist) chipped in 12 points. Cannon also led the way on the glass with eight rebounds while Young added seven.
Dwayne Morton paced the Gophers (0-7) with 19 points and seven rebounds.
Tied at 4-all, Harper hit back-to-back 3-pointers to spark an 18-6 run to open up a double-digit lead midway through the opening half.
Baskets from Jacob Smith and Devon Esslinger trimmed the deficit to 22-14 before three free throws an a thunderous putback dunk by Young stretched the lead to 13 with 3:43 to play.
After a Uvan Stewart layup, Cannon recorded a pair of layups on the break in the final 1:55 to make it a 15-point game at the break.
Five straight points from Morton trimmed the margin to 43-32 with 11:28 to play but that was as close as Goucher would get.
Leading 51-38, the Green Terror canned six straight free throw attempts to push the margin to 19 with 5:24 to play.
The Gophers had one last run, notching eight of the game's next 10 points to draw with in 13 but Andy Kwiatkowski (Gaithersburg, Md./Gaithersburg) drained a 3-pointer to virtually seal the win.
Cannon and Josh McWilliams (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) each dished out five assists.
McDaniel returns to action at Wilson on Sunday, Dec. 17. Game time is 2 p.m.
