Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel outscored Chatham 22-10 over the final seven minutes of the third quarter to break open a two-point game and notch a 79-47 victory in the opening round of the 2017 McDaniel Tipoff Tournament in women's basketball action on Friday.
Liv Storer (Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia/Galen Catholic College) led the Green Terror (1-1) with 17 points and six rebounds. Caroline Ward (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) added 12 points for her second double-digit scoring game in as many collegiate outings.
Ashley McClain led three players in double figures for the Cougars (1-1) with 15 points and also added seven rebounds.
Baskets from Libby Bowles (Gaithersburg, Md./Damascus), Storer and Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) staked McDaniel to a 6-0 lead in the first 2:40 and the hosts never trailed.
Chatham evened the game at 12-all behind a 6-0 run of its own on a Maggie Soeder putback with 3:23 showing in the first quarter.
A Jamese Word (Belmont, Mass./Lexington Christian Academy) converted a three-point play and Ward tallied four straight to make it a 19-12 game after one period.
The Cougars closed to within two twice in the second quarter but a Hannah Zajac (Houston, Texas/Clear Creek) 3-pointer with 3:07 remaining sparked a 9-3 flurry to end the half and built the hosts a 33-25 advantage.
Chatham scored eight of the first 10 points in the second half to make it a 35-33 game but five straight points from Storer sparked the game-clinching run. A Ward triple with 4:54 on the clock made it a 47-37 lead, stretching the advantage to double digits for the first time.
The lead methodically grew throughout the fourth quarter to its final 32-point margin.
All 15 players in uniform netted at least one point for the Green Terror.
Hannah Ravenscroft (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) chipped in three points and two assists but also led the defensive charge with five steals.
McDaniel will host No. 2 Christopher Newport in Saturday's championship game. The Captains defeated St. John Fisher 74-48 in the night's other first-round game. Game time is 4 p.m.
