Ward tallies 12 in debut

YORK, Pa. – York (Pa.) built a double-digit lead early before holding on to top McDaniel 67-61 in the women's basketball season opener for both teams on Wednesday.

Caroline Ward (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) led the Green Terror (0-1) with 12 points in her collegiate debut. Liv Storer (Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia/Galen Catholic College) added 10 points.

Morgan Kuehne and Katie McGowan led the Spartans (1-0) with 14 points while Katie Wagner added 13.

Tied at 2-all, York tallied six straight points to force a McDaniel timeout with 6:26 to play in the opening quarter.

The lead extended to 10-2 before Ward hit a 3-pointer from the left wing to snap a 3-minute, 8-second scoreless drought with 4:39 showing.

The Spartans extended the lead to 21-8 on a Logynn Fuller 3-pointer with 1:21 to play.

A Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) steal and short jumper made it a 21-10 game en route to a 23-11 score after one quarter.

After Wagner hit a triple to put the hosts on top 27-12 with 8:03 to play in the second quarter, Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) responded with a layup to spark a 14-5 run. Libby Bowles (Gaithersburg, Md./Damacus) capped the nearly six-minute stretch with a 3-pointer from the top of the arc.

Beth Wiseley responded at the other end with a triple of her own to end the run.

Burgess just beat the shot clock off an out-of-bounds under to make it a 36-30 game at the break.

Behind four points from McGowan, the Spartans tallied the first 11 points of the second half to take a 47-30 lead with 6:25 on the clock.

Two Hannah Zajac (Houston, Texas/Clear Creek) free throws snapped the run at the other end of the floor.

A Ward trey just 29 seconds into the fourth quarter trimmed the deficit to 52-43 but Kuehne responded with a 3-pointer of her own to push the lead back to 12.

A Renie Tsomos (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) 3-pointer and Emily Metzger (Shamong, N.J./Seneca) driving layup trimmed the margin to 63-56 to force a York timeout with 4:04 remaining.

One Storer free throw with 1:34 on the clock snapped a 2-minute, 34-second drought by both teams and make it a six-point game.

McGowan converted a layup from the left side with 56.9 seconds on the clock to push the lead to eight.

A Smith steal and single free throw with 28.7 seconds showing closed the deficit to seven once again.

Ward drained a triple from the left wing with 5.7 seconds on the clock to make it a four-point game but Sam Mocniak hit a pair of free throws with 5.2 ticks to set the final margin.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Chatham in the opening round of the McDaniel Tipoff Tournament on Friday. Game time is 6 p.m.
