Mills records eight kills, two blocks

LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall took the final two sets to secure a 3-1 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball action on Wednesday.

Hayley Mills (Bowie, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) recorded eight kills and two total blocks for the Green Terror (14-2, 3-1 CC), who had its 13-match winning streak snapped.

Barbara Kapustin led the Diplomats (11-6, 3-1 CC) with 10 kills.

After the teams split the first two sets, the squads traded points early in the third set until a Casey Marrow kill and ace gave the hosts a 4-2 lead.

Clinging to a 9-7 lead, Franklin & Marshall tallied seven of the next eight points to open up a 16-9 lead en route to a 25-16 victory.

The fourth set featured four ties and four lead changes in the first 12 points before Gabby Mavroidis served nine straight points, including four of her five aces for the match, to open up a 14-6 lead en route to a 25-14 win.

Trailing 23-20, Kapustin kills on either side of back-to-back knockdowns from Christine Yoo gave the Diplomats a 24-23 led and forced a timeout. Emma Lorenzen (Hagerstown, Md./South Hagerstown) responded out of the break with a kill to tie the score.

A Kapustin kill and Grace Maggiore ace, however, gave Franklin & Marshall a 26-24 win.

A Taylor Bauman (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) ace keyed a 6-1 start to the second set for McDaniel.

Leading 17-12, a block from Lorenzen and Lauren Wells (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) sparked a run of six straight points for the Green Terror. Gayle Edelstein (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) tied the match at 1-all with an ace for a 25-14 victory.

Isabel Paci (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) added seven kills to the attack. Edelstein and Wells contributed 15 and 12 assists, respectively. Bauman led the defense with 18 digs while Allie Lugar (Wilmington, Del./Dupont) and Kendall Hanak (Highlands Ranch, Colo./Rock Canyon) added 10 digs each.

The Green Terror returns to action at Bryn Mawr on Friday. Match time is 7 p.m.
