Zahora notches fall in CC opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Gettysburg won six of the first seven bouts to capture a 27-15 victory over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) wrestling opener for both teams on Friday.

Mick Zahora (Ashburn, Va./Briar Woods) led the Green Terror (3-6, 0-1 CC) with a first-period fall at 141 – one of two pins on the night.

Paul Triandafilou paced the Bullets (3-2, 1-0 CC), capping the night with the visitors' lone fall of the night 31 seconds into the second period.

Lenny Ogozalek opened the night with an 8-2 win at 125 before Noah Malamut took a 10-0 major decision at 133 to make it a 7-0 lead.

Zahora's pin in 2:30 closed the deficit to 7-6 but Gettysburg reeled off four straight wins.

After a Jake Bracken 10-7 win at 149, Traken Sutton needed an extra period to take a 3-1 win at 157. After Sutton and Erik Meyer (Fallston, Md./Archbishop Curley) recorded an escape in each period, Sutton broke the tie with a takedown midway through the first sudden-victory period.

Quinn Merrigan and Dan Ebert each recorded major decisions to stretch the lead to 21-6 before Ronald Mattox (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck) got a takedown early in the third period and flipped his opponent over for the 6-minute, 7-second pin.

Jake Pooton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) got a sudden-victory win of his own, earning a takedown 20 seconds into the extra period for a 3-1 win at 197, drawing the match within 21-15.

Triandafilou remained perfect on the season, however, with a 3-mintue, 31-second fall to cap the win.

The Green Terror returns to action at Stevens for a trimatch with the Ducks and Merchant Marine on Saturday, Jan. 21. Action begins at 12 p.m.
