WESTMINSTER, Md. – The women's soccer game between McDaniel and Catholic was postponed on Wednesday.
With the Green Terror (1-0) leading 3-2, lightning was detected within eight miles of campus with 23:15 remaining in the contest. Per NCAA rules, play had to be suspended at that point and could not resume until 30 minutes had passed since the last strike.
After waiting 70 minutes, the coaches and officials agreed that play could not be resumed due to darkness. The game was officially called and a decision will be made as to whether the two teams can find a mutual date to replay the contest.
The Cardinals (2-0) struck first on a penalty kick in the third minute before McDaniel reeled off three goals in a 13-minute span. Catholic found the back of the net again with 25 seconds remaining in the first half to close to within 3-2.
With storms approaching during halftime, play was resumed in hopes of reaching the 70-minute mark and making the game official per NCAA rules. Play was halted 3 minutes, 15 seconds shy of the necessary reasonable point of conclusion.
No stats from the game count.
The Green Terror returns to action at the York College Women's Soccer Classic against Kean on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
