Brooks drains game-winner to finish with 21

WESTMINSTER, Md. – For the second time in the last four games, McDaniel found itself trailing by double digits in the second half before rallying to win. On Saturday, it was a 65-64 Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball victory over Ursinus to remain in the playoff chase with four games to play.

Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) once again hit the game-winning shot for the Green Terror (10-10, 7-7 CC), putting back his own miss with 14.1 seconds to play to finish with a game-high 21 points.

Malik Draper led the Bears (10-11, 6-8 CC) with 20 points.

Trailing 64-52 after three straight Ursinus 3-pointers gave the visitors a 12-point lead with 4:33 to play, McDaniel started its comeback.

Brooks drained a jumper with 3:58 before finding Nick Perugino (Lewes, Del./Salesianum) for a triple to cut the deficit to seven with 3:06 showing.

Josh McWilliams (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) made it a four-point game with 1:18 to play before the Bears were called for an illegal screen at the other end.

Inbounding with 46.8 seconds left, McWilliams drained a second 3-pointer to make it a 64-63 game and was fouled in the process.

He missed the ensuing free throw but the ball was knocked out of bounds, giving the Green Terror the ball back with 22.9 ticks.

Brooks pulled up at the elbow off the inbounds but missed. The senior tracked down his own rebound and went back up with it for a one-point lead.

With just three team fouls in the second, McDaniel opted to give a foul once Ursinus crossed into the front court. Out of the inbounds with 6.3 seconds remaining, the ball was knocked around and the Bears didn't get a good look a game-winning shot.

The first half featured nine ties and seven lead changes with each team building a lead of five.

Tied at 32-all, two Patrick Mekongo free throws gave the Bears a two-point edge with 1:22 showing.

After a single free throws, Brian Rafferty hit a 3-pointer and Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) and Draper traded layups in the final 25 seconds to make it a 39-35 game at the break.

Urisnus immediately pushed the lead to seven to start the second half.

Baskets by Stwart and Brooks eventually drew the hosts back even at 50-all before Eric Williams drained a 3-pointer to spark a 14-2 run.

Stewart finished with 19 points and seven rebounds for the Green Terror.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. Game time is 8 p.m.
