O'Boyle earns title, Clifford Award with 100th win

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ryan O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./Central Catholic) became McDaniel's fifth three-time Centennial Conference (CC) wrestling champion, recording a trio of pins en route to the title at 133 on Saturday.

Alvontae Drummond (Lincoln, Del./Milford) joined O'Boyle as a placewinner, finishing second at 141 to help the Green Terror to a sixth-place finish with 32.5 points. Stevens won its second straight team title with a conference-record 121 points. The Ducks outdistanced second-place Merchant Marine by 51.5 points – the largest margin in conference history.

O'Boyle also became the third McDaniel grappler to earn the CC's Chris Clifford Award, which is given to the senior with the most career points in the conference championship. He is the first Green Terror winner since Brock Glotfelty took the honor in 2011.

O'Boyle's three victories on the day also gave his 100 for his career – the first McDaniel wrestler to that mark since Glotfelty posted a program-record 126 wins from 2008-11.

The top seed opened his day with a 58-second pin of Johns Hopkins' Brandon Tran before downing Muhlenberg's Patrick Sockler in 2:58 in the semifinals.

In the championship bout, he pinned Washington and Lee's Zach Bylykbashi in 1:56 to become just the 16th CC wrestler to win three titles and second to do it at 133.

Drummond's day at 141 started with a 16-1 technical fall midway through the second period before notching an 8-1 decision over second-seeded Alex Pollera (Washington and Lee) in the semifinals.

In an action-packed final, top-seeded Ryan Wilson was awarded a pair of takedowns that capped an 8-5 win over Drummond.

Trey Mitchell (Lewes, Del./Caesar Rodney) and Nick Cross (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) each added a single win for the Green Terror.

Mitchell opened his day at 149 with a 5:00 pin over Connor Joyce (Johns Hopkins) before falling 12-4 to Quinn Merrigan (Gettysburg) in the semifinals. In the consolation semifinals, Ian Burke (NYU) pinned Mitchell in 2:30.

Cross notched an 8-5 win over Adrian Herrera of NYU in the opening round at 184 before falling to top-seeded and eventual champion Phil Woods (Stevens) by the same score in the semifinals. Cross' day ended with a 7-1 decision to Washington and Lee's Brandon LaFore.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Messiah in the final dual meet of the season on Wednesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
