Zeps hits three late free throws for win

Box Score

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – McDaniel rallied with three free throws in the final second to defeat Ursinus 51-49 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.

Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) led the Green Terror (3-4, 2-2 CC) with 14 points, including going 6-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Libby Lannon led the Bears (3-4, 2-2 CC) with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

In a game that featured 10 ties and eight lead changes, it came down to the final two minutes.

Trailing 49-46 on a Brielle Clarke 3-pointer with 2:03 to play, Zeps hit a layup at the other end to make it a one-point game with 1:39 showing.

Inbounding with 38.2 seconds left, Ursinus milked the clock before driving for a layup. After two offensive rebounds, the Bears went to the line with 3.9 ticks remaining.

Two missed free throws later, Zeps controlled the rebound and a timeout was called with 2.4 seconds showing.

The officials put the clock back to 3.6 seconds and McDaniel was inbounding in the frontcourt. With fouls to give, Ursinus opted to foul on a drive to the basket, giving the Green Terror the ball under the basket with 0.4 seconds showing.

Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) inbounded to Zeps at the top of the arc. Not letting Zeps get a clean look, the Bears were whistled for a foul but the clock had hit 0.0. After a lengthy discussion, the officials put 0.1 seconds back on the clock and awarded Zeps three free throws.

The senior calmly sank all three. Ursinus had one last chance but the tip attempt did not go.

Urisnus built an 8-3 lead through the first 5:47 of the game before a Smith layup and two Alyssa March (Fallston, Md./Fallston) free throws trimmed the deficit to one with 3:04 to play in the opening quarter.

One Kaci McNeave free throw in the final two seconds made it a 10-9 Bear advantage after one quarter.

Libby Dougherty (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) sank two free throws with 0.5 seconds left in the second quarter to give McDaniel a 21-20 edge at the break.

The Green Terror built a 26-20 lead on a Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) 3-pointer with 7:35 showing in the third quarter before the Bears took a 36-35 edge into the final quarter.

Ursinus reestablished a six-point advantage on a Lannon layup with 5:59 to play in the fourth period but baskets from March, Liv Storer (Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia/Galen Catholic) and Smith evened the game just over three minutes later.

McDaniel returns to action at Elizabethtown on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
