Drummond wins twice in split

GREENSBORO, N.C. – McDaniel split a non-conference trimatch at Greensboro, defeating Hampden-Sydney 39-11 before falling to the hosts 24-21 in wrestling action on Saturday.

Alvontae Drummond (Lincoln, Del./Milford) went 2-0 to pace the Green Terror (3-2), picking up a forfeit and major decision on the day.

Against the Tigers (1-3), McDaniel won four matches by forfeit and added two more victories by fall to account for six of its seven bout victories.

Charles Wallace (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) opened the match with a forfeit win to stake the Green Terror to a 6-0 lead that it would not relinquish.

Brian Swenson cut the deficit to 6-4 with a 14-5 win at 133 before Drummond took the second forfeit for a 12-4 lead.

Clint Wright (Glenville, Pa./South Western) earned a 10-9 victory at 149 behind a late reversal that capped a back-and-forth third period. Trailing 6-4 entering the final period, Wright chose neutral to start the period and earned a takedown to even the bout. After an escape, Wright made it an 8-7 match score with his second takedown of the period. An exchange of reversals gave the sophomore his victory.

At 157, David Sniffen got a late takedown to break a 3-all deadlock and win 5-3 to close the team score to 15-7.

Luke Crowe (Baltimore, Md./Dundalk) and Ronnie Wuest (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna), however, put together back-to-back pins to secure the match. Crowe won in 4:25 at 165 while Wuest ended the 174 match in 1:35.

Jordan Beck notched a 10-2 win at 184 for the Tigers but Jake Pooton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) and Billy Emerson (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) each took forfeits to wrap up the match.

Against the Pride (2-5), Greensboro opened up an early 9-0 lead before holding for the victory. Gabriel Wilson opened the match with a 17-1 technical fall midway through the third period before Zachary Rainess added an 8-0 win at 133.

Drummond closed the deficit to 9-4 with a 19-5 victory at 141 but Zachary Wilson earned a late escape and had enough advantage time to earn the extra point and a 9-8 win for Greensboro at 149.

Cole Nagle (Highland Lakes, N.J./Vernon Twp.) made it a 12-10 score with an 18-second pin at 157.

Erik Meyer (Fallston, Md./Archbishop Curley) momentarily put McDaniel in front 15-12 with a 20-4 technical fall in the third period of the 165 match.

Back-to-back decisions and a Kacee Hutchinson 3-minute, 44-second fall at 197 secured the victory.

Emerson capped the night with a 55-second pin at heavyweight.
