Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Dickinson hit a floater in the lane as time expired in the first overtime to top McDaniel 50-49 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Tuesday.
Liv Storer (Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia/Galen Catholic) led the Green Terror (1-4, 0-2 CC) with a career-best 14 points, going 6-for-9 from the floor.
Lauren McBride paced the Red Devils (4-1, 1-0 CC) with 19 points, including forcing overtime, but it was Jennifer Smith who hit the game-winning shot to finish with six points.
Trailing 42-37, Mary Martin hit the first of two free throws with 2:12 to play in regulation to make it a four-point game.
McBride then closed the deficit to two on Dickinson's next possession.
A shot clock violation gave the Red Devils the ball in the frontcourt with 17.0 seconds remaining after a timeout. McDaniel had two fouls to give, using both, to force a third inbounds with 14.1 seconds showing.
McBride drove the baseline from the right side and converted with 6.4 seconds on the clock.
The Green Terror got a potential game-winning shot off but McBride swatted it away to force overtime.
After McBride and Storer traded baskets in the first 1:07 of the extra five-minute session, Smith hit a jumper in the lane to put the visitors on top.
Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) hit the second of two free throws to make it a one-point game midway through the overtime.
Two Melanie Yeomans (Adamstown, Md./South Hagerstown) jumpers around a McBride layup put the hosts in front by one with 59.8 seconds to play.
The Red Devils turned over the ensuing possession with a 10-second differential on the shot and game clocks. McDaniel missed a pair of shots and Dickinson came up with the rebound before calling timeout with 6.8 seconds to play.
Smith drove the length of the court and swished a floater in the lane as time expired to give the Red Devils a victory in their conference opener.
Dickinson jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the game's first 8:30 before two free throws closed the margin to 16-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Green Terror – behind six points from Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) and five from Storer – reeled off 17 straight points to take a 23-16 lead in the final minute of the period.
McBride canned a triple with 28 seconds to play, snapping an 11-minute, 2-second scoring drought and making it a 23-19 game at the break.
The Red Devils scored the first four points of the second half to tie the game before five straight points from Yeomans put the hosts back in front by five – the largest lead by either team in the second half.
Yeomans finished with a career-best 11 points while Smith added 10. Zeps led the way on the glass with 11 boards to go with three steals.
McDaniel returns to action at home against Washington (Md.) on Thursday. Game time is 6 p.m.
