WESTMINSTER, Md. – York (Pa.) pulled away with a 23-point fourth quarter to top McDaniel 62-50 in season-opening women's basketball action for both teams on Tuesday.

Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) led the Green Terror (0-1) with 16 points. Alyssa March (Fallston, Md./Fallston) added 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

Morgan Kuhne led three players in double digits for the Spartans (1-0) with 18 points. Katie Wagner added 15 points while Sam Hruz chipped in a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

McDaniel scored the first six points of the game, including four straight to open the contest from Smith. Kuehne got York on the board at the 4:47 mark of the first quarter, snapping an 0-for-10 start for the Spartans. The visitors scored 10 of the quarter's final 12 points to take a 10-8 lead and they did not trail again until early in the fourth quarter.

Tied at 12-all, Morgan Golec converted a three-point play with 8:05 showing in the second quarter, sparking a 13-3 burst.

Wagner and Kuehne capped the 5-minute, 12-second run with back-to-back fast-break layups.

Four straight points from March closed the deficit to 25-19 at halftime.

Trailing 39-31 on a Sam Mocniak triple from the right side, jumpers from March and Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) and a Smith 3-pointer as the third quarter expired trimmed the deficit to 39-38.

A Sarah Bach (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) second-chance layup gave McDaniel a 40-39 edge 40 seconds into the final period but Hruz responded with a 3-pointer at the other end to put York back in front.

Back-to-back Wagner layups and a Katie McGowan free throw accounted for an 8-0 run.

A Zeps jumper trimmed the margin to 47-46 with 6:14 to play but the Spartans scored the next seven points.

A Hruz jumper made it a 58-48 game with 3:25 remaining en route to the 12-point win.

The Green Terror returns to action at home against Mt. Aloysius on Friday. Game time is 6 p.m.
