COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ryan O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./Central Catholic) went 4-0 with a pin to lead McDaniel to a 3-1 day at the North/South Duals hosted by Ursinus in non-conference wrestling action on Saturday.
The Green Terror (7-3) split a pair of one-point matches that included claiming a victory over WPI on criteria.
In the opening match against WPI, the two teams split the 10 bouts and the score was deadlocked 18-all. By virture of Alvontae Drummond's (Lincoln, Del./Milford) pin at 141, McDaniel was awarded an additional team point and won the match 19-18 on the second criterion.
Brian Amato staked the Engineers (4-2) to a 4-0 lead, notching an 11-0 win at 125 before O'Boyle recorded an 11-4 decision, falling just short of evening the match at 4-all.
Drummond's 5-minute, 47-second fall gave McDaniel a 9-4 advantage before Trey Mitchell (Lewes, Del./Caesar Rodney) followed with a 14-10 victory at 149 to make it a 12-4 match.
Three straight WPI wins, including a Graysen DeLuca tech fall at 157 put the Engineers back in front, 15-12.
A Nick Cross (Centreville, Md./Queen Anne's County) edged Dan Wensley 5-4 at 184 on a late takedown to even the match once again.
Michael Curtis won 6-1 at 197 before Taylor Avino (Fair Haven, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven) forced the deadlock with a 9-3 victory at heavyweight.
Against Rhode Island College, the Green Terror won seven bouts, including three by fall to record a 31-15 victory.
A Jake Rendelman (Owings Mills, Md./Owings Mills) 4-1 win at 125 and O'Boyle 14-5 victory at 133 staked McDaniel to a 7-0 lead before the Anchormen (5-1) closed to with 7-5 on a Shawn Giblin 19-4 technical fall at 141.
Back-to-back first-period pins from Mitchell and Wade Bishop (Greensboro, Md./North Caroline) stretched the lead to 19-5.
A Luke Yox (Westminster, Md./Liberty) 6-5 win and Ronnie Wuest (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) 3-minute, 37-second fall secured the match, giving McDaniel a 28-5 lead.
Brandon Conrad (184) won by fall and Victor Zabula (197) won by major decision to close the margin to 28-15 before Avino wrapped up the match with a 5-4 win.
The Blue Jays (5-4) opened the third round with a Philip Torresani third-period fall at 125 for an early 6-0 lead en route to a 20-18 win.
Mike O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./North Reading) and Ryan O'Boyle followed with wins by decision to even the score. Mike won 7-4 at 133 while Ryan took a 9-4 victory at 141.
An 11-2 win from Chad Lammer and 13-1 victory by Chris Kummerer put Elizabethtown back in front 14-6 before Ronald Mattox won by forfeit at 165 and Yox earned a 3-2 win at 174 for a 15-14 edge.
The Blue Jays took the next two bouts, however, with Rocco Hladney winning 11-4 at 184 and Luke Fernandez winning 8-2 at 197.
Avino wrapped up the day with an 8-4 win at heavyweight.
In the final match of the day, the Green Terror recorded wins in the first three bouts en route to a 25-18 win over Oneonta.
Frantz opened the action with a 13-3 win before Ryan O'Boyle added a 1-minute, 44-second fall. Marcos Mercado (Northampton, Mass./Hyde School Woodstock) added a 14-7 win at 141 to stake McDaniel to a 13-0 lead.
The Red Dragons (2-10) got on the board with a 1-minute, 25-second pin by Don Murphy at 149 but Bishop answered with a pin of his own, winning 12 seconds into the final period at 157.
Evan Wallace recorded a first-period fall at 165 before Shaun Gillen and Cross traded decisions to make it a 22-15 score.
Timothy Flower closed the deficit to four with a 7-4 win at 197 but Avino sealed the victory, capping his 4-0 day with a 5-1 win at heavyweight.
McDaniel returns to action in the Centennial Conference opener at Johns Hopkins on Wednesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
