Box Score COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus scored the first eight points of the second half to open up a 16-point advantage en route to an 81-67 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Saturday.
Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) netted a career-best 26 points to lead the Green Terror (5-6, 2-3 CC), including hitting six 3-pointers for the second time this season.
Matt Knowles added 29 points of his own to lead the Bears (6-6, 2-3 CC), including hitting five triples and all six of his free-throw attempts.
Tied at 19-all, Matt Knowles canned a jumper with 5:00 showing in the first half to spark an 8-0 run.
An Austin Cannon (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) basket with 1:21 showing closed the deficit to six but a Mark Wonderling putback gave the hosts a 29-21 advantage at the break.
The run extended to 18-2 over the first 3:32 of the second half before five points from Brooks closed the deficit to 39-26 with 15:08 on the clock.
After a Remi Janicot free throw, Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) hit a jump shot to make it a 40-28 but Matt Knowles hit a jumper at the other end to spark another 8-0 burst that extended the lead to 20.
Trailing 58-39, Brooks and Josh McWilliams (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) hit 3-pointers to bookend an 8-0 burst that closed the deficit to 11 with 6:50 to play.
The lead swelled as large as 17 on a Knowles triple with 4:13 to play before McDaniel got as close a 10 down the stretch.
Cameron Royster (Derwood, Md./Magruder) hit a free throw in the first minute of the game before a Knowles 3-pointer a minute later gave the hosts a 3-1 advantage.
Back-to-back Stewart jumpers pulled the Green Terror even with 13:07 showing.
Tied at 12-all, Eric Williams hit a 3-pointer with 12:54 on clock to put the hosts on top for good.
A Matt Knowles layup 3 minutes, 34 seconds later stretched the lead to five before Stewart and Janicot traded free throws.
A Brooks 3-pointer and McWilliams basket drew the game level for the final time with 5:16 to play in the opening half.
Stewart added 16 points and eight rebounds for the Green Terror while McWilliams netted a career-best 10 points.
McDaniel returns to action at Muhlenberg on Tuesday. Game time is 8 p.m.
