Box Score

SALEM, Va. – Roanoke used a 19-4 run over a 4-minute, 43-second span in the second half to turn an eight-point deficit into a seven-point lead, eventually defeating McDaniel 90-84 in the championship game of the Cregger Classic in non-conference men's basketball action on Sunday.

Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) led the Green Terror (5-4) with 19 points, hitting seven of his 14 field-goal attempts to lead four players in double figures. It was the most points scored by McDaniel since tallying 97 at Ursinus on Dec. 7, 2013.

Carter Wright led five players in double figures for the Maroons (10-1) with 21 points that included draining five 3-pointers.

After Cameron Royster (Derwood, Md./Magruder) hit a layup to give the Green Terror a 72-64 lead with 8:59 to play, Cameron Smith canned two free throws at the other end to start the hosts' comeback.

Four straight points from John Fitchett drew Roanoke within 72-70 with 6:54 on the clockbefore a pair of free throws from Wright evened the game for the 13th time just 10 seconds later.

A Wright 3-pointer with 6:25 on the clock accounted for the game's 20th and final lead change.

A Smith triple stretched the lead to six before Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) snapped the Green Terror's 3-minute, 41-second scoring drought with a layup.

An Eli Sumpter free throw gave the Maroons their largest lead with 4:16 to play.

Baskets from Stewart and Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) closed the deficit to 83-80 with 2:47 on the clock but Smith responded with a trey to double the advantage.

Four straight points from Echols made it an 86-82 game with just 36 seconds remaining but Roanoke went 4-for-4 from the charity stripe over the final 31 seconds to secure the win.

Neither team led by more than three in the first half until a Joey Caldwell 3-pointer sparked an 8-0 burst that gave the Maroons a 17-11 advantage with 11:19 remaining.

Layups from Nick Yockey (Bethesda, Md./Walt Whitman) and Royster put McDaniel back in front 26-25 just over three minutes later and the teams traded points for the remainder of the half with Roanoke taking a 44-43 edge into the locker room.

Clinging to a 60-59 lead, Brooks scored seven straight McDaniel points to key a 12-5 stretch that gave the Green Terror its largest lead.

Stewart finished with 16 points while Echols added 14 off the bench. Austin Cannon (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) reached double figures for the second time in 2016 with 11 points.

Brooks and Stewart earned spots on the all-tournament team for their play over the weekend.

McDaniel returns to action in the return the Centennial Conference play, hosting Franklin & Marshall on Thursday. Game time is 8 p.m.
