Burgess hits two late triples to finish with 11, secure victory

WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel scored 16 of the final 22 points to claim a 58-47 victory over Washington (Md.) in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.

Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) matched her career best with 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers in the final 5:21, to help the Green Terror (13-3, 8-1 CC) remain in first place in the conference standings at the halfway point. Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) led the way with 21 points, adding seven rebounds and three steals.

Ali Grundy paced the Shorewomen (3-11, 0-8 CC) with 17 points.

Washington trailed by as 11 in the first half, closed to within 20-19 before a Nichols 3-pointer and Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) layup stretched the lead to 25-19 at the intermission.

The lead ballooned back to seven on two Nichols free throws to make it a 31-24 game with 7:28 showing in the third quarter. However, 10 points from Grundy keyed a 10-2 run that put the Shorewomen on top 34-33 just four minutes later.

After two Grundy free throws accounted for the lead change, the first of Burgess' triples at the other end put McDaniel back in front to stay.

Two Jordan Weir free throws made it a 42-41 game with 9:05 to play in the final period before Nichols – the reigning CC Player of the Week – canned a jumper with 7:31 remaining to spark a 10-0 run.

Burgess hit her other two treys during the run, including one in the left corner as the shot clock expired to cap the run.

The Green Terror built a 7-0 lead en route to an 11-5 advantage at the end of the first quarter before extended the lead as large at 11 with 6:59 on the clock.

Smith finished with 10 points and career high-tying seven rebounds. She added four assists while Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had five assists to go with her four points and two blocked shots.

McDaniel is scheduled to return to action at Franklin & Marshall on Saturday at 1 p.m. Due to the impending weekend snowstorm, a decision on any adjustment to game time or date will be made on Thursday or Friday.
