Bauman notches 21 digs in CC opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Muhlenberg took the first two sets en route to a 3-1 victory over McDaniel in the Centennial Conference (CC) volleyball opener for both teams on Wednesday.

Taylor Bauman (Charlottesville, Va./Albemarle) led the Green Terror (7-2, 0-1 CC) on defense with 21 digs to match her season best. She also had a pair of aces. Kloe Martin (Littleton, Colo./Heritage) chipped in a double-double, recording 16 kills and 13 digs.

Allison Glass led the Mules (7-3, 1-0 CC) with a double-double of her own, recording team highs of 15 kills and 19 digs. Elizabeth Garrison matched Glass with 19 digs while Shannon Hubert had 11 digs to go with 44 assists.

In the opening set that featured 12 ties and four lead changes, neither team could open up an advantage of more than four points.

With Muhlenberg ahead 20-16, Madeline Rose (Soddy Daisy, Tenn./Baylor School) knocked down one of her nine kills and added an ace as part of a 5-1 stretch that drew the hosts back even.

The teams traded points before a service error and Joanne Josephson ace finished off a 28-26 victory for the Mules.

The Mules – behind four kills from Glass – finished the second set on an 11-1 run to win 25-19 after McDaniel had built an 18-14 advantage

Muhlenberg jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third set before a Genna Weger (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) ace keyed a 3-0 counter. From there, neither team could establish a lead of larger than two points until a Martin kill and three straight Mule errors gave McDaniel a 25-22 win.

Muhlenberg once again jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the fourth set before two Martin kills keyed an 8-2 counter that gave McDaniel a three-point edge.

Five straight Mule points flipped the lead back in the visitors' favor.

Muhlenberg's lead swelled as large as 21-16 en route to the 25-20 win.

Colette Kellen (Olney, Md./Covenant Life) chipped in 25 assists and eight digs while Maddie Moyer (Brookeville, Md./Sherwood) added 21 assists and six digs. Caroline Savin (Shrewsbury, Pa./Susquehannock) added nine kills.

Rose and Lexi Corral (Tuscon, Ariz./Gaithersburg [Md.]) had four blocks each while Weger finished with three aces and 13 digs.

McDaniel returns to at the Blue Jay Invitational hosted by Elizabethtown on Saturday. The Green Terror takes on Carnegie Mellon at 11 a.m. and Eastern at 1 p.m.
