ROANOKE, Va. – Alvontae Drummond (Lincoln, Del./Milford) finished second at 141 to lead McDaniel at the 2015 NCAA Division III East Regional hosted by Ferrum in wrestling action on Sunday.
By virtue of his runner-up finish, the sophomore will make his first trip to the NCAA Division III national championship on Mar. 13-14 hosted at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa.
As a team, the Green Terror finished with 41.5 points and in ninth place at the 18-team regional. Delaware Valley won the title with 123 points, edging New York University by a single point.
Drummond opened his day with a 3-minute, 48-second pin of Trent Dolby (Merchant Marine) in the pigtail portion of the bracket. He followed that up with a 13-4 win over Johns Hopkins' Connor Joyce.
A 2-minute, 14-second pin pushed Drummond into the semifinals, where he defeated Ryan Budzek (College of New Jersey), 3-2. In the title bout, the seeds held and NYU's Brandon Jones topped Drummond by fall in 2:17.
Ryan O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./Central Catholic) fell short of his bid for a third straight NCAA championship appearance. The top-seed at 133 started with a 2-minute, 40-second pin of Matt Laux (Gettysburg). O'Boyle followed that up with a 14-7 before falling in the semifinals to Nathan Pike (NYU), 8-6.
O'Boyle advanced to the third-place match with a pin in 4:27 over Matthew Sparks (King's) before falling to Zach Haynes by fall in 1:02.
Five other McDaniel wrestlers won one match each in their respective weight classes.
Logan Yox (Westminster, Md./Liberty) was the only one of those five to win his first match, notching an 11-3 major decision before falling twice by major decision.
At 125, Nathaniel Frantz (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) dropped a 10-2 decision to Mike Mui (Merchant Marine) before topping Jake Daniel (King's), 12-8. Frantz's day ended with a 16-1 technical fall loss to Stevens' Rob Murray.
Trey Mitchell (Lewes, Del./Caesar Rodney) was pinned in 1:40 by Matthew Coppola to start the day at 149. Mitchell bounced back with a fall of his own, pinning Narankhuu Ganbaatar (Hunter) in 4:17 before falling to Stevens' Zachary Wilhelm, 18-4.
At 174, Jake Pooton (Mt. Airy, Md./South Carroll) was pinned early in the second period before racking up a 12-0 victory over Maksimilian Garkusha (Hunter). Pooton then dropped a 7-6 decision to Ursinus' Cody Richmond.
Robb Donovan (Chestertown, Md./Kent County)'s one win at heavyweight by fall in just 50 seconds, downing CNJ's Sigala Fosam. Donovan dropped an 8-4 decision to open his day and fell 5-1 to finish the day.
