Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel built a 13-point halftime lead en route to a 63-48 Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball victory over Haverford on Saturday.
Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) netted 25 points to lead the Green Terror (13-8, 8-6 CC), who moved into sole possession of fourth place in the conference standings with four games to play.
Matt Sherman paced the Fords (4-17, 2-12 CC) with 18 points.
After Stewart and Henry Stevens traded baskets to start the game, Stewart added back-to-back buckets to open up a 6-2 advantage with 16:31 to play and the hosts never trailed.
James Levine cut the deficit in half before Andrew Merlo (Rehoboth, Del./Cape Henlopen) drained a 3-pointer with 15:34 on the clock to spark an 8-2 burst over the next nearly four minutes.
A Lucas Colombo free throw and Sherman triple trimmed the deficit to 14-10 but five straight points from Phillip Perry (Crownsville, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) and a Stewart layup gave McDaniel its first double-digit lead with 6:10 on the clock.
A Merlo layup in the final 30 seconds of the half extended the advantage to 27-14 at the break.
A Gibby Graves layup trimmed the deficit to 35-28 with 12:52 to play before two Cameron Royster (Derwood, Md./Magruder) layups pushed the lead back to double digits.
After an Anthony Reyes triple made it a 45-36 game with 8:33 showing, Stewart responded with a trey of his own.
Two Sherman free throws made it a 48-40 game but that's as close as Haverford could get down the stretch.
Royster finished with 15 points and nine rebounds while Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) added seven rebounds and five assists despite not scoring for the first time in 42 games.
McDaniel returns to action at home against No. 4 Dickinson on Wednesday. Game time is 8 p.m.
