Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – Johns Hopkins jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never trailed in a 61-52 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Wednesday.
Alyssa March (Fallston, Md./Fallston) and Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) netted 10 points each to lead the Green Terror (22-2, 15-2), who entered the game ranked 25th in the latest d3hoops.com poll. Playing its first game as a ranked team since 2007, McDaniel had its 13-game winning streak snapped but is still assured the No. 1 seed in next week's conference tournament.
Beatriz Williams led three players in double digits for the Blue Jays (15-8, 12-5 CC) with 14 points. Ciara McCullagh and Maggie Fruehan added 12 points each. McCullagh also grabbed 17 rebounds as part of a 60-31 advantage on the glass. Fruehan chipped in with 13 rebounds while Katie Clark grabbed 10.
A pair of McCullagh baskets keyed an 8-0 start over the first 2:51 before Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) trimmed the margin to 8-2.
Back-to-back Williams layups stretched the lead to 10 with 15:54 to play in the opening half.
A Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotii) steal-and-layup sparked a 6-0 burst hat trimmed the deficit to four with 13:58 showing.
The Blue Jays pushed the lead back out to eight on a Freuhan layup with 8:06 showing before Zeps sparked a 10-2 burst that evened the game at 23-all with 4:22 on the clock.
The teams traded baskets before Jessica Brown and Fruehan each hit jumpers in the final five seconds to open up a 31-27 edge at the break.
A Steph Perez (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) 3-pointer trimmed the deficit to 44-3 with 8:52 on the clock before baskets from Williams, McCullagh and Alyssa Fleming stretched the lead back to seven over the next 5:25.
Nichols a jumper on the Green Terror's next possession but the hosts could get no closer down the stretch.
Davis finished with seven assists and seven steals to go with her eight points. Emma Wingerd (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) led the way on the glass for McDaniel with nine boards.
McDaniel concludes the regular season at Gettysburg on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
