WESTMINSTER, Md. – Ryan O'Boyle (North Reading, Mass./Central Catholic) won the 133-pound weight class to successfully defend his title and lead McDaniel to a fourth-place showing at the 2015 Centennial Conference (CC) wrestling championship hosted by McDaniel on Saturday.
O'Boyle was one of six Green Terror wrestlers to finish in the top four, leading the hosts to 53 points. Stevens won its first title with 102.5 points, outdistancing Ursinus in the finals by 11 points. Merchant Marine finished third with 57 points.
O'Boyle's day opened with a 4-minute, 38-second pin of Johns Hopkins' Christian Vallis before he recorded the fastest pin of the tournament with a 12-second fall of Stevens' Anthony Geiger to advance to the championship match for the third time. The No. 1 seed held his top seeding and prevailed over Kevin Hoogheem (Urisnus), 5-3.
Logan Yox (Westminster, Md./Liberty) finished second at 165. After receiving a bye into the semifinals, he won 9-6 over NYU's Matt Eulau before falling 15-4 to CJ Caserta (Stevens) in the title tilt.
Alvontae Drummond (Lincoln, Del./Milford), the top seed at 141, finished third. He opened with a 6-4 win and first-period fall before falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Christian Hooghem (Ursinus), 9-2. Drummond notched a 16-2 win in the consolation semifinals before winning the third-place bout, 4-2.
Erik Meyer (Fallston, Md./Archbishop Curley), Nick Cross (Centreville, Md./Queen Annes County) and Robb Donovan (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) all finished fourth at the respective weight clases.
Meyer opened his day at 157 with a 15-2 win before falling to eventual champion and most outstanding wrestler Micahel Polizzi 15-0 in the semifinals. Meyer notched a 10-4 win to advance to the third-place match, where he fell 4-1 to Johns Hopkins' Christian Salera.
Cross recorded a 6-minute, 7-second fall in his first match at 184 before falling 10-4 to top-seeded Daniel Manganaro (Ursinus). Cross bounced back with a 5-4 win before falling 10-4 in the third-place match to Ron Tassoni (Washington and Lee).
At heavyweight, Donovan dropped his first match of the day to Matan Peleg by fall in 5:44. Donovan then notched a 1-minute, 58-second pin in his first match of wrestlebacks and advanced to the third-place match with an 8-7 win in the first tiebreaker round over Johns Hopkins' Ellis Flannery. Leonard Smith topped Donovan by fall in 2:38 to finish third.
The Green Terror returns to action at Messiah on Tuesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
