Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel gradually extended its lead, defeating Swarthmore 61-42 in Centennial Conference (CC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
Freshman Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) drained three 3-pointers off the bench to help the Green Terror (6-1, 3-0 CC) take an undefeated conference mark into the break. As a team, McDaniel hit a season-high 10 triples.
Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) led the Green Terror with 15 points and a career-best six assists.
Jessica Jowdy led the Garnet (2-4, 1-2 CC) with 12 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Trailing 6-1, Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) hit McDaniel's first field goal of the game with 4:39 to play in the first quarter, snapping an 0-for-7 start to the day.
Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) followed with a 3-pointer to even the game at 6-all.
After Kayla Sembly and Smith traded layups, Burgess hit a trey to give McDnaiel the lead for good with 2:31 on the clock.
A Renie Tsomos (Forest Hill, Md./Bel Air) jumper pushed the lead to 13-9 at the end of the period.
Sarah Bach (Manchester, Md./Manchester Valley) and Burgess each hit 3-pointers to start the second quarter, giving the hosts its first double-digit advantage.
The lead swelled as large as 12 before Abbey Deckard drained a 3-pointer of her own to cut the deficit to 30-21 at the break.
After nearly two-and-a-half minutes in the third period without a point, Jowdy hit a layup to close the deficit to seven before Nichols drained a 3-pointer to push the advantage back to double figures.
Treys from Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) and Burgess helped extend the lead to 39-25.
A Deckard triple closed the deficit to 48-36 with 6:22 to play in the final period but McDaniel counted with a 12-3 burst to secure the victory.
Zeps finished with 10 points and seven rebounds while Bach chipped in seven rebounds, three assists and two steals. Davis added nine points and four assists.
The Green Terror returns to action at home against Elizabethtown on Sunday, Dec. 13. Game time is 2 p.m.
