Box Score

BALTIMORE, Md. – McDaniel built a 10-point lead and survived a final-minute rally to top Johns Hopkins 54-52 in Centennial Conference (CC) men's basketball action on Tuesday.

Tim Stewart (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) led the Green Terror (4-1, 2-0 CC) with 19 points and a season-high 12 rebounds while Wes Brooks (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) added 12 points.

Austin Vasiliadis led the Blue Jays (1-4, 0-2 CC) with 14 points, five assists and six steals.

Trailing 29-25 on a Gene Williams layup with 15:31 to play, Brooks responded with a triple to spark an 11-2 run that put McDaniel in front for good.

Brooks contributed five points during the run while Austin Cannon (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) added all four of his points to put the Green Terror on top 36-31 with 9:20 showing.

Layups from Cameron Royster (Derwood, Md./Magruder) and Kevin Yrizarry (Owings Mills, Md./Owings Mills) and a Brooks triple accounted for a 7-0 burst that turned a one-point game into 45-37 advantage with 5:21 to play.

The lead swelled as large as 10 before back-to-back Vasiliadis buckets cut the deficit to 49-43.

Brooks drove the lane and hit a layup at the end of the shot clock to push the lead back to eight with 1:01 showing.

Vasiliadis, however, responded at the other end with a triple from the left wing.

The Green Terror missed three front end of 1-and-1s to keep the door open, allowing the Blue Jays to claw to within 51-49 on a Sam Gordon baseline jumper with 14.4 seconds left.

Royster hit a pair of free throws but another Vasiliadis 3-pointer made it a one-point game with 1.5 seconds left.

After one made free throw by Duane Echols (Jessup, Md./Hammond) with 0.8 seconds showing, an offensive foul on the heave gave the ball back to McDaniel and preserved the win.

The teams traded baskets early before Johns Hopkins put together seven straight points to take an early 11-4 edge.

The Blue Jays built a 10-point advantage with 10:14 showing before McDaniel sored 11 straight points to take a 19-18 edge seven minutes.
