Box Score WESTMINSTER, Md. – McDaniel outscored Hood 25-7 in the second quarter to take a 40-20 lead into the locker room en route to a 71-43 victory in the women's basketball season opener for both teams on the first day of the 2015 McDaniel Tipoff Tournament on Saturday.
Karli Zeps (Reisterstown, Md./Seton Keough) recorded a double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Green Terror (1-0), who advanced to Sunday's championship game and will face Juniata at 4 p.m.
Verkia Smith led the Blazers (0-1) with 10 points.
A Brittney Davis (Laurel, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) free throw and Lindsey Nichols (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark's) layup staked McDaniel to an early 3-0 lead.
Hood drew even with three free throws before Nichols and Zeps each hit layups to put the Green Terror in front 7-3 with 5:03 to play in the first quarter.
Two Alexis Andrukat free throws gave the visitors a 13-12 edge with 1:04 to play in the quarter before Jasmine Smith (Baltimore, Md./Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) hit a jumper with 49 ticks remaining and Halle Burgess (Ashton, Md./Good Counsel) hit one free throw for a 15-13 advantage after one period.
The Green Terror carried that momentum into the second quarter, extending the run to 13-0 before Taylor McGaughey hit a jumper with 6:57 remaining in the second quarter to halt the drought for the Blazers.
McDaniel extended the lead to 20 for the first time on a Nichols layup with 2:11 showing to make it a 35-15 game.
The lead swelled to as large as 29 on a Zeps free throws with 2:54 to play in the third quarter that put the hosts on top, 59-30.
The lead for McDaniel held between 26 and 32 points throughout the final period.
Nichols added 18 points while Burgess debuted with 11. Davis handed out eight assists to go with her eight points and five steals.
